About the event

These balmy summer evenings are making us wish we were on holiday, so we decided the next best thing would be to bring an authentic taste of the Greek Islands to Truro. So we have teamed up with highly talented chef Athina (read more about her below) and we will help you feel 18 again, discovering Greek food for the first time! Come and meet some new people, share an Ouzo and tuck into some amazing food.

WHEN?

Wednesday 24 August 2022 7pm – 10pm

HOW IT WORKS

Once you've bought your ticket, please arrive at 7pm, then grab a seat in one of our covered outdoor booths to share with other like-minds. Great food guaranteed. Great conversation? Well, that’s down to you!

WHY?

Athina and I sat down and chatted for hours about our love of food, particularly Mediterranean food. We made a list of all the dishes that would make up our perfect meal, and this is it. Too good not to share. So here we are, just for you. We hope you enjoy tucking in as much as we did!

MENU

Arrival drink

A glass of fresh, tongue tingling homemade lemonade with a shot of Ouzo or gin (or lemonade just on it’s own).

Tzatziki (v)

Cooling thick, creamy Greek yoghurt with cucumber, garlic, and olive oil.

Hummus (vg)

Smooth, garlicy chickpeas with the very best tahini money can buy, lemon juice, smoked salt and a secret ingredient…

Homemade pitta breads

Soft, pliable and very moreish homemade pitta breads to mop up your tzatkiki and hummus.

Greek lemoned potatoes

New potatoes roasted and dressed with garlic & lemon and flat leaf parsley.

And the stars of the show….

Imam Bayildi (v or vg)

OK, so this is Turkish not Greek but this dish is an absolute favourite of ours. Legend says that a Turkish priest fainted after eating this – some say after overindulgence, others (including me) say it is because the dish was so mind-blowingly delicious.

Whichever, we love it. Slowly cooked aubergine with tomato, onion, garlic, oregano and all baked until soft and rich, with salty feta on top. (Please ask if you would like a vegan version.)

Spanakopita

Paper thin sheets of crispy filo pastry triangles filled with spinach, feta and a hint of fresh mint. (These are so good that I ate one of these for every single breakfast while backpacking around Greece in 1989 – washed down with a bottle of ice cold chocolate milk! Athina has verified this was an authentic Greek breakfast!)

A large glass of red/white/rose wine or chilled lager or IPA

And to finish up

Baklava

More tissue paper thin filo pastry filled with chopped nuts makes the perfect small, sweet desert.

Price

All of this for £28.50 a head

MEET THE WONDERFUL ATHINA: chef, patisserie expert, customer – and now friend of this cafe

Athina grew up near Athens and learned the importance of food from her Mama. Despite her mum being a busy working mother, she always found time to cook for her family, and Athina would watch, taste and stir. There were no measuring jugs in the kitchen because for her mother, it was all about tasting, tasting and keep tasting. The more olive oil used, the better!

At 18 Athina moved to the UK to study culinary arts but fell in love with patisserie (you should follow her Instagram – it is beautiful – ‘The Magic Whisk’) and learned her craft at some of London’s best hotels such as the Dorchester and the Berkley. After 10 years of long hours and stuffy tube journeys, Athina and her partner Bruno (also a pastry chef) moved to Cornwall for a quieter, better quality life.

Athina says “I love food. If I’m not thinking about it, then I’m probably eating it, and vice versa! I wanted to share a piece of my childhood with you and nothing says Greek more than comfort food, good company and wine (obviously)”.

We love everything about Greek food - the memories of youthful holidays – the comfort, the happy sunny flavours, and colours. We really hope you enjoy a slice of Greece here in our courtyard in Truro.
